Julia Fischer playing the Rubtsov Violin Concerto

2018-07-17

Julia Fischer first met the Russian composer Andrey Rubtsov in Moscow in 2001. 15 years later, he dedicated a violin concerto to her, which she premiered together with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. On 18 and 19 July, Julia Fischer will perform this work with the Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie under Michael Sanderling at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Since their first meeting, the artists have maintained contact. Julia Fischer met Rubtsov again in the course of her first CD recording in 2004 (Russian Violin Concertos). She became more and more interested in his compositions. “He sent me scores of the works he had written, and I was fascinated by his tonal language. It was modern, yet deeply emotional, and truly gorgeous. Few composers today are able to write a really beautiful melody. And I’m afraid that I cannot live without melody." says Julia Fischer in her current article for the JF CLUB. "Several years later, I asked Andrey to write a violin concerto for me. As the repertoire for chamber orchestra and violin is very limited and I was travelling a lot at the time as leader of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, I insisted on a small complement."

Now, there will be another opportunity to hear the work, on 18 July in Neubrandenburg and on 19 July in Wismar. It will also be recorded for the first time: Deutschlandfunk Kultur will broadcast the recording from Neubrandenburg on 19 July at 20:00 CET, subsequently, from 20 July the broadcast will be available for on-demand streaming at the JF CLUB for 30 days!
